By Chrisbert Garcia: 27-year-old Deidra Smith is the only Belizean among 59 other persons who have been selected from across the Commonwealth to receive Queen Elizabeth’s prestigious ‘Young Leaders Award’ in London next year.
This year’s awards catered for persons between the ages of 18-29 who have been working to support others, raise awareness and inspire change on a variety of different issues including: education, climate change, gender equality, mental health and disability equality.
Smith is being awarded for a scholarship program which provides financial help and encourages young people to gain further education, training and qualifications. In an interview with the media, she expressed her excitement to be selected and said that she wants to be able to help young people reach their full potential.
