By Delilah Ical: Delays in deliveries of sugar cane to the sugar factory have prompted an emergency meeting among stakeholders of the sugar industry this morning.
Showers over the past days have made it difficult for farmers to harvest their cane and deliver it on time to the mill. BMG understands that the factory has not been receiving the daily quota of sugar cane thus has fallen behind on production.
The constant rains have dampened the soil at cane fields and some farmers have been unable to take out cane that has been burned. As a result, leaders of harvest groups are being asked to report how much cane has been burnt and to not burn any more fields for the time being.
Another matter to be presented at the meeting this morning is the closing period of the factory for the holidays. It has been discussed and agreed upon that the mill will shut down from December 23rd at 6:00 p.m. and open at 10:00 a.m. on December 26th.
Representatives from all three cane farmer associations, the Sugar Industry Control Board and BSI/ASR are expected to attend the meeting.
