By Chrisbert Garcia: A small aircraft known as the “Wings of Hope” which is use to transport patients in critical medical conditions from small treatment centers around the country to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City, almost had a terrible crash landing at the Punta Gorda (PG) Airstrip a short while ago.
The plane was on its way to pick up a patient from PG’s Hospital for urgent attention and when the pilot attempted to land, one of the wheels broke off, sending the plane sliding across asphalt before coming to a stop.
Along with the pilot inside was only one other person — an Emergency Medical Technician, who fortunately didn’t receive any injuries. The plane is unable to take off since it is missing a wheel and the patient, supposedly a baby, who was going to be airlifted will have to be transported by ground transportation to Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City.
