Residents of San Pedro Town listened to developers make their case at a consultation on the environmental impact assessment (EIA) for the project in January, but concerns were raised, primarily about the effects the over-water structures might have on the surrounding marine environment.
Minister of Tourism Manuel Heredia yesterday said another consultation was planned in the coming days, but added that as far as he and Government are concerned, the new Blackadore Caye gets “two thumbs up.” It will provide jobs, he said, and be a beacon for the region and the world if allowed to proceed.
The island is located seven miles west of Ambergris Caye. If the project is approved it is expected to be opened in 2018.
