Woman sets fire to Virgin Mary statue in Orange Walk

By BBN Staff: Shortly before seven on Wednesday night sisters at the convent adjacent the La Inmaculada Church in Orange Walk Town responded to a fire at the grotto located in the church compound.

BMG has not received an official police report but understands that a woman set the statue of the Virgin Mary that stood in the grotto on fire. The sisters at the convent reportedly had to fetch water in buckets to douse the fire.

We refrain from naming her as we have been reliably informed that she is not mentally stable and has since been hospitalized and is undergoing treatment. The woman was detained on at the church compound as she did not leave but the parish priest did not press charges given her health condition.
