By Chrisbert Garcia: A cleanup campaign in the areas of Central American Boulevard, Mahogany Street, Tribuce Street and Haulover Creek this weekend, which are all in Sanitary Zone 4 of Belize City, resulted in the removal of over 16 truckloads of waste material.
It was a joint effort between the Belize City Council, the Environmental Health/Vector Control Unit and the Ministry of Health to combat the issues of unkept or non-existent drains, overgrown or abandoned lots, garbage hot-spots and socio-economic conditions in those areas which are considered to be at high risk for Dengue transmission.
The conditions before the cleanup, were ideal for harboring mosquitoes and other disease carrying vectors such as rats and roaches, hence the reason it was seen necessary to carry out this initiative.
A total of approximately 30-35 persons participated in the effort on Saturday and Sunday. Another cleanup is planned for March 5th and 6th.
