The men, Ladyville residents: Alex Smith, Michael Requena and Keith Flowers of Belize City were caught with 16 pounds of marijuana and subsequently charged.
They were busted after police set up a stake out at the Mameyal Curve area along the Philip Goldson Highway located between San Jose Village and Orange Walk Town after receiving a tip. As the police unit waited for the vehicles of interest, a gold Cadillac Escalade SUV and a car flew past them in an attempt to escape.
Police set chase and caught up with them at the roundabout at the northern entrance of Orange Walk Town. The Escalade reportedly came to a stop after running off the highway. Reports were made that an officer or officers in the police unit fired several shots at the vehicles but Inspector Nicholas Palomo, Second in Command
of the Orange Walk Police Formation says that never happened.
Smith, Requena and Flowers were detained and were escorted to the Police station along with their vehicles. Once there officers conducted a thorough search of both vehicles and found several packets of marijuana inside the Escalade. Nothing was found in the car.
