By BBN Staff: Officers attached to the Special Patrol Unit in Benque Viejo Del Carmen, were on a special operation in Arenal Village in the Cayo District when their attention was drawn to a red and white Toyota Corolla coming from Arenal, Guatemala into Arenal Belize.
As a result, officers intercepted the vehicle at the Arenal bus stop on the Belize side. Inside the vehicle the officers observed three Hispanic men.
They were asked to step out of vehicle and were informed that a search would be conducted.
A search on one of the men dressed in a blue t-shirt, long blue jeans pants and black shoe carrying a black and cream fox brand knapsack on the right shoulder resulted in the discovery of a black plastic bag which was shown to him and opened in his presence resulting in the discovery of green leafy substance suspected to be cannabis.
He was immediately informed of the offense committed, placed under arrest and escorted to the Benque police station where he was identified as Joel Baltazar Pedro, 25. He is a Guatemalan national of Barrias, Guatemala.
At the Station the suspected cannabis was weighed in the presence of Pedro which amounted to 284 grams.
He was subsequently arrested and charged for the offense of drug trafficking.
