By Aaron Humes: This past week saw all nine municipalities of Belize recognized as child-friendly by the United Nations Children Fund.

Belize City was last in line and the ceremony took place on Friday in the Battlefield Park despite the Old Capital not quite meeting all the targets for certification.

Nonetheless, Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley says the basic requirements have been met, including the formation of a child advisory body with youth representatives who have addressed the City Council.

The Council has developed an action plan to look at more specific ways of meeting such milestones as inclusive government, safe streets and homes, recreation and sports, among other things.

UNICEF Country Representative Ivan Yerovi, addressing Friday’s ceremony, cites a commitment and passion not only in Belize City, but around the country that will quickly move all nine toward certification within six months to a year.

According to Yerovi, it is not only about giving youth and a children a voice in municipal affairs, but also about seeing to their needs.

The initiative represents a strategy for promoting the highest quality of life for all citizens.
