By Aaron Humes: Staff Sergeant Richard Lambey of the Belize Defense Force was shot on Holy Saturday while on a water resupply mission near camp Valentin close to the Belize Guatemala border in the West.
Following the leak of the BDF’s internal report on the shooting, there was a suggestion that the soldier may have actually been shot by friendly fire responding to the threat of the assailants and not by an illegal Guatemalan.
However, yesterday, CEO in the Ministry of National Security, George Lovell told reporters said that based on all their information so far, the culprit was Guatemalan.
CEO Lovell confirmed reports that the soldier may have been alone when he was shot and said they will have to revisit security protocols followed in such dangerous and remote areas. Staff Sergeant Lambey is recovering from his injuries.
