By Aaron Humes: The University of Belize (UB) is hosting its annual research conference in Belize City this morning for students and faculty.
Though nominally hosted by the faculty of Management and Social Sciences, the conference is this year dominated by topics related to education, part of the University’s planned expansion of the conference’s footprint.
However, Dean Dr. Bernard Watler told us that the primary admonition to students is to research what they know and are interested in.
It is part of the University’s mandate to be the leading research institution in Belize.
Faculty member Augustine Domingo researched the perceived difficulties of Mathematics topics by high school teachers, which leads to their students’ problems in class later on.
He recommends greater assistance including the establishment of special laboratories to study math as a science.
Meanwhile, Denise Young Matthews looked at primary school teachers’ attitudes to students with disabilities.
She told us that primarily because they had less direct training for special education, some teachers had more negative attitudes.
To remedy this she calls for the placement of special education teachers in each classroom and greater training for regular teachers as part of their general education.
