Peace at El Pilar?

By Dalila Ical: Guatemalan Minister of Culture and Sports, Jose Luis Chea Urruela said this week that the Cultural Monument of El Pilar, located within the adjacency zone between Guatemala and Belize has an important symbolism and can become a place of peace and be managed by both countries in the future. Of course this would require a large scale work plan, he added.

The minister made the remarks on Wednesday after he visited the monument located in Melchor de Mencos in Peten, Guatemala as part of a familiarization tour of the conservation projects being carried out at the site.

The project is geared at upgrading the site as a national monument which brings with it a higher category of protection. Emphasis on the site’s ecology is also done as a means of conservation and sustainability of the country’s heritage.

The minister was accompanied by officials of the ministry of Cultural and Natural Heritage.

El Pilar is an ancient Maya city center located on the Belize-Guatemala border.
