By BBN Staff: A Belizean vessel carrying members of the media and Belizean civilians was denied access to the Sarstoon River by Guatemalan Armed Forces (GAF) again this morning.

BBN is informed that Wil Maheia and personnel from Channel 5 News made the trip and were told, “This is Guatemalan waters.”

The latest incident comes in the midst of controversy and confusion over what agreements are really in place between Belize and Guatemala. Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington had said that following the meeting in Istanbul, Turkey there was an informal agreement where both sides agreed that Belizeans would have unrestricted access to the Sarstoon River.

When the media tested that notion days later the GAF said they didn’t know about any such agreement.

Several days ago, a diplomatic note from Guatemala to Belize leaked in which Guatemala made no acknowledgment of any such agreement ever being made. BBN will keep following this story and will have more details later.
