Dara returns to fundraising for feeding program

By Aaron Humes: They’re still weeks away, but founder of Dara’s Feeding Program Joel “Dara” Robinson stopped by this morning to begin promoting the 5th annual Ride for Hunger to be held at the end of the month, and the Tribute to Lucky Dube concert on August 7th, his traditional mid-summer fundraisers for the program.

Because of the active support for the Ride for Hunger, Dara told us he is asking participants to register early, though those who only wish to ride to support are welcome. The fee is ten dollars.

Participants including businesses may contact Dara at 623-3662 to register early but formal registration takes place on the day of the ride. Wristbands signifying participation will be made available and only active participants will receive service on the route of the ride. As always, collections of canned goods, school supplies and money will be accepted at the Smart headquarters where the ride begins from 5 in the morning.

Dara also told us about the tribute concert for the murdered South African reggae star Lucky Dube, whom he said along with Jamaica’s Bob Marley (on whose birthday Dara also holds a tribute) “walked the walk” for their people.

As is traditional, donations of goods will be accepted – no expired goods allowed though – at the Birds’ Isle compound.

All proceeds from both events go to Dara’s Feeding Program, which serves 40 kids per day with nutritious and delicious home cooked meals.
