By BBN Staff: Unconfirmed but credible reports to BBN indicate that Minister of Agriculture Gaspar Vega has announced that he will resign from Cabinet in the wake of a scandal which surfaced last week implicating the former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Lands in a scheme in which his son was paid $400,000 worth of tax payers’ dollars for illegally obtaining a privately owned land.
According to reports, Vega has informed his CEO in the Ministry of Agriculture that he will be tendering his resignation. There has been no official confirmation but Prime Minister Dean Barrow will be hosting a press conference this afternoon to address the scandal.
Last week documents surface which showed that Vega authorized the sale of a privately owned land near the Haulover bridge to a business associate of his. The land was then sold to Andre Vega, the Minister’s son, however, the Minister had already been informed that the land was already privately owned. The land was then returned to the original title holder and in return, Andre Vega was compensated over $400,000 in tax payers’ dollars.
When asked last Thursday, Barrow said he had not been briefed of the matter and refused to take question regarding the matter. If Vega resigns from his seat in Orange Walk North it would trigger a by-election.
