Breaking: A business belonging to a prominent Belize City businessman has been raided by authorities

Posted: Wednesday, October 19, 2016. 2:45 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: BBN has received reliable reports that a business located on Mapp Street in the Northside of Belize City belonging to a high ranking UDP official was raided by police and the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU).

The raid happened sometime between late last night and early this morning. A senior police officer confirmed the raid to BBN but has asked for his name to remain anonymous.

According to reports reaching BBN, the FIU was acting on information provided by the US intelligence service and was looking for paper and electronic trails of suspected tax evasion and money laundering by offshore companies registered in Belize on behalf of US nationals.

The senior police officer provided BBN with the name and principals of the business, however, BBN cannot release this information until a formal report is provided by the police or the FIU.

BBN has confirmed that no one was arrested but we were unable to confirm whether any cash, document or computer equipment was confiscated.
