By BBN Staff: The People’s United Party (PUP) has appointed Senator Eamon Courtney as its representative on the Senate Select Committee, according to a Facebook post today by President of the Senate, Lee Mark Chang.

The Senate Select Committee is tasked with investigating the findings of the report by the Auditor General into the Passport, Visa and Nationality Departments for the period 2011-2013.

Prior to Courtney’ s appointment, the PUP had dubbed the committee “bogus” because it allowed government a voting advantage as it had two representatives.

Courtney’s appointment came after Government Appointed Senator, Aldo Salazar was elected as chairman of the Committee thereby reducing the government’s voting power to only one.

Salazar will only be able to vote to break a tie in the event that one of the members of the Committee is absent or abstains from voting.

While the PUP has named its representative, the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industries is yet to announce the participation of its representative, Senator Mark Lizarraga.

At a special membership meeting held by the chamber almost 3 weeks ago, it was voted that Lizarraga would not participate on the Committee given the composition and limited terms of reference.

The hearings by the Committee are scheduled for November 9 in which the Auditor General and her team will be the first to be interviewed.
