By BBN Staff:  The Ministry of Health has acquired vaccinations via the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), for the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which is a major cause of cervical cancer and which affects thousands of Belizean women in their late 20s.

According to health officials, girls between the ages of 9 and 13 who may be in Standard 4 will be the annual recipients of the vaccination if parental consent is granted.

The Ministry of Education is collaborating with the Ministry of Health and is expected to meet with 4,000 parents of girls targeted for vaccination.

According to Chief Education Officer, Dr. Carol Babb, after her Ministry completes meeting with parents then the vaccination will officially roll out, probably by next month.

The cost of the vaccination is an estimated quarter million Belizean dollars.
