By BBN Staff:  Another accused murderer is back on the streets of Belize City after his trial fell apart based on technicalities.

Jordan Cayetano, 23, was charged in connection with the April 2, 2011 murder of Chinese grocer Yan Ying Chen, 32.

Chen was gunned down in her shop on King Street.

Police claimed that Cayetano confessed to committing the crime because his, “general,” slain reputed George Street gang leader, Gerald “Shiny” Tillett was in police custody.

In trial Justice Troadio Gonzalez did not accept the oral confession as the attorneys for the accused argued that the statement was not voluntarily given.

Cayetano told the court he was denied food and water, electrocuted, kept for an extended period in confinement and badly beaten by police to cough up the statement.

According to Justice Gonzalez, “I am left with a reasonable doubt about the truthfulness of the police officers.”

Additionally when police processed the crime scene they recovered three 9 mm expended shells which they used forensic technology to match with a 9 mm pistol that was supposedly recovered from the accuse shortly after the murder.

However, in court yesterday the prosecution revealed that the bullets had gone missing presumably from the National Forensic Lab.

Justice Gonzalez ruled that the case against Cayetano be discontinued and that he was a free man.
