By BBN Staff:Attorneys representing PUP Area Representative Julius Espat and House Speaker Michael Peyrefitte met with Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin yesterday.
The attorneys, Andrew Marshalleck and Nigel Hawke, met in the CJ’s chamber for a hearing on a claim filed by Espat, who was suspended from the House meeting in August.
In that suspension he was ejected by police after a heated squabble with the House Speaker. Since then, there has been no sitting of the House of Representatives.
Espat has also been stripped of his stipend as Area Representative.
We are told that there are efforts to have this matter settled out of court and to have Espat returned in time for the next House Meeting scheduled in December.
However, he must accept that he had been reasonably suspended.
According to Espat’s lawyer, they believe that he was invalidly suspended as proper procedures were not followed by the Speaker.
The Chief Justice is expected to rule on this matter on December 6.
