By BBN Staff: According to the Minister of Defense, John Saldivar , the Belize Defense Force (BDF) officers continue to access the Sarstoon island freely and there is no protocol in place for Belizeans to traverse the disputed area.
Saldivar stated that Belizean civilians can visit the island freely but are urged to check in at the BDF forward operating base first. He followed up by saying that Belizeans may be followed by the Guatemalan armed forces to ensure that they are not doing anything illegal.
This comes after members of SATIM were stopped by GAF and told the Belizean government had agreed to a protocol in which Belizeans must seek approval from Guatemala to access the area.
