By BBN Staff: She came to vacation in Belize in mid-January of last year. However, she never made it back to the United States.

ABC7 Executive Producer Anne Swaney was murdered on Belizean soil.

On January 14, 2016, she was reported missing after she had set out to go horse riding but she was unable to get a horse and so she waited near the Mopan River until one would become available.

On January 15, some of her belongings were found on a deck near the Mopan River where she was last seen. Her partially clothed body was seen down the river. From all indications, she had been strangled to death.

A Guatemalan national found near the murder scene was apprehended by police and was believed to have been involved in what had appeared to be a case of sexual assault.

However, he was quickly released and the forensic tests were unable to confirm that she had been sexually assaulted.

One year after her gruesome death, Belizean authorities have not made any progress in the case.

FBI authorities remain involved in the case but the Belize Police Department is leading the investigation.
