By BBN Staff:According to the Agencia Guatemalteca de Noticias, Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales is today visiting communities in the north of Peten, in the adjacency zone with Belize.
Carlos Raul Morales, Guatemala’s Foreign Minister, is accompanying the president in visiting San Jose Las Flores Chiquibul, located in the mountainous part of the municipality of Melchor de Mencos.
Morales is also visiting the community of Santa Cruz, located in the municipality of San Luis, Petén, to meet with the mayor and visit the point of entry to the “adjacency zone” between Santa Cruz, Guatemala side, and Jalacté, in Belize.
Belize and Guatemala hold a long standing territorial dispute.
Guatemala has been drawing attention in internationalizing their fight for the territory.
At the United Nations convention last year, Morales told leaders of the world that Belize is a bad country and that his country has undertaken actions of cooperation and good neighborliness in their geographical surroundings.
“However, in recent months we no longer encounter such a reciprocal attitude on the part of the Belizean authorities,” Morales went on to say.
The agency reports that both countries are planning to hold a popular consultation so that the residents of each country decide if the case is taken to the International Court of Justice.
