By Richard Harrison: Belize has a very small skilled population with around 4%, or 14,000, having a bachelor’s degree or higher education.

The majority of these either work directly for the status quo or are answerable to them in some way, shape or form. They are mostly comfortable, living a middle-to-upper-income lifestyle in terms of Belize standards.

The two major political parties are tools of the status quo who finance them….and most of the educated population is either aligned with the blue or red parties….and will sing and dance to the tunes played by their political leaders….no matter what. They are each willing to wait out their turn in opposition to get at the public cookie jar.

There is a small group of educated Belizean’s that either ride the fence between the two major parties….and an even smaller group that have declared themselves separate and apart from these, making an attempt to offer alternative or “independent” political leadership….but the vast majority remain silent and live their life without a worry in the world, as long as they have peanut butter and jelly sandwich and beers in the refrigerator.

Belize is facing serious economic and financial challenges….challenges which the political directorate does not seem to know how to solve….or do not have the political will to solve.

Most educated Belizeans are used to listening to political rhetoric and other “noise in the marketplace”. They have become numb….growing in cynicism and sarcasm.

Many of the educated Belizean’s are children of what used to be the Belize middle and upper business and/or land-owner class….their parents and grandparents have lost much of the wealth they worked so hard for….many have lost their homes and businesses….many more have left the country to make ends meet elsewhere in the world….the Belizean businessperson is on the near extinction list….since the advent of Hon. Manuel Esquivel in 1984….and progressing through Hon. Said Musa and now Hon. Dean Barrow….all of them servants of the Nero they created…..who is ”fiddling while Rome burns”.

There is a mighty few Belizean intellectuals who provide opinion leadership on social and other media….but these are dwindling in number….they have no political power…..not even traction…and they are getting frustrated…because “no one is listening”!

Last year the Belize National Teachers Union showed the country what can be done when unified against a tyrannical government…..but these teachers were mostly from the primary schools and high schools…..teachers of the junior colleges and universities are not members of the union…and they did not join in the industrial action of the union.

If Belize wants to turn its fortunes around…..this reality is what needs to be addressed….the teachers and students of junior colleges and universities need to be organized…..a unified power keg…..approximately 6,000 strong and located in every major city and town. These, unified with the BNTU, can work in tandem to achieve mass disruption of the kind that governments anywhere in the world will have to respond to constructively.

The students of the University of Belize, because the institution is riddled with non-Belizean entities that bow to the political directorate that gave them their contracts…needs to be the most militant….they have the most to win or lose from Belize turning around its fortunes…and they should want a bigger say in what, how, when, who, where and why things are done in Belize. Their leadership may come from within or without.

Belize can expect nothing better from the servants of Nero….each individual Belizean must start to take random individual and/or group decisive action…if you are hurting, then show your hurt….do not wait around for others to express your hurt for you. Do not direct your actions towards each other…..direct your actions towards those in the political directorate and their minions, all of whom are serving Nero faithfully…..and Nero is fiddling while Rome burns.
