By BBN Staff: World Water Day is celebrated annually on March 22nd and this year the United Nations is celebrating the day with the theme: “Wastewater”.

The Ministry of Natural Resources, in conjunction with various local water partners, is hosting a one-day forum to commemorate World Water Day.

The Official Opening Ceremony will be held on tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. at the Ramada Princess Hotel King’s Room in Belize City. The Opening Ceremony will be followed with an open exhibit and a Wastewater Forum, to be held concurrently. Official ceremonies and presentations commence at 9:00 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m.

An international day to celebrate and mark the vital importance of freshwater was recommended at the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED).

The UN General Assembly responded by designating March 22, 1993 as the first World Water Day. Each year, World Water Day is celebrated on March 22nd, and highlights a specific aspect of freshwater and coordinated by one or more members on behalf of UN-Water.

Members of the World Water Day Planning Committee include the Hydrology Unit – Ministry of Natural Resources, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Labour, Local Government and Rural Development, the Public Utilities Commission, Department of the Environment, Belize Water Services Limited, Crystal Water Limited, National Climate Change Office, University of Belize and the Belize Electric Company Limited.
