By BBN Staff: In April of last year, a Guatemalan minor was shot and killed in the Cebada area of the Chiquibul forest. The gunfire exchange occurred when Belize defense Force (BDF) soldiers along with Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) personnel encountered the minor and his family in Belizean territory when they opened fire on the Belizean patrol.
The Belizean patrol returned fire and 13-year-old Julio Alvarado was killed in the crossfire.
The Guatemalan government protested against Belize by boosting her military presence along Guatemala’s border with Belize and recalling the Guatemalan Ambassador to Belize. The Government of Belize then agreed to an investigation to be carried out by the Organization of American States (OAS). The OAS proceeded with their investigations into the matter and confirmed that Belizean authorities used justifiable force in the incident.
The OAS has also agreed to carry out an investigation into the murder of Belizean Special constable Danny Conorquie, who was killed while on duty at the Caracol archeological site in September of 2014.
Belize’s Ambassador to the US Patrick Andrews told the media that the dialogue into the Conorquie case continues and that the OAS had already engaged the same specialists who assisted in the Alvarado case to investigate.
