By BBN Staff: On Thursday, during day one of the budget debate, GOB presented several bills, including four bills to update parole laws in Belize.

Currently the punishment for murder is the death penalty. That is to change, however, as on Thursday in the House of Representatives, Prime Minister Dean Barrow presented a bill, which if passed will see the minimum sentence someone must serve before becoming eligible for parole if found guilty of murder, reduced.

Additionally, one of the bills will see the electronic documentation of oral evidence. Also, another bill will amend the minimum sentence a minor must serve in prison before being considered for parole. Finally, there will be an amendment to the bill for parole rules and guidelines for persons convicted of murder. The bills will go to the Senate next week for approval.
