By BBN Staff: On March 16, 2017, BBN reported that OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro along with Guatemalan Foreign Minister, Carlos Raul Morales visited the “ Adjacency Zone” between Guatemala and Belize.

During his trip, Almagro visited the Guatemalan communities that are along the Adjacency Zone between both countries.

After visiting Guatemala, Almagro headed to Belize where he visited PM Barrow, the Foreign Minister, as well as a group of PUP leaders in Belize City.

This morning, on Channel 5 ‘Open your eyes’ programme, Executive Director for Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) Raphael Manzanero, stated that the visit of Luis Almagro could have been more beneficial to Belize if he was taken to the grounds of the Chiquibul to experience first-hand the devastation that is being done to Belize’s natural resources by Guatemalan poachers.

Whilst Almagro visited Belize, Belizean authorities opted for a fly over of the Chiquibul instead.

Manzanero said that “we can only hope that by him flying over, he noticed the devastation being done to the Chiqubul national park and Belize’s forests.”

Manzanero also reiterated that Belize could have taken advantage of the opportunity by allowing Almagro to actually see the damages being done to our waterways by gold panning and deforestation.
