By BBN Staff: “Both major political parties must take the blame for the economic situation that Belize is in,” Osmany Salas, Senator for the NGO’s told the Senate today.

Salas expressed his disappointment in the preparation of the budget and said that government must team up with the opposition to find a solution to the economic problems that Belize faces.

Salas said that government needs to get rid of corruption since corruption has become a part of Belizean culture. “It is ingrained and entrenched in every faucet of our society  and it is killing us,”  he added.

In his remarks to the Senate, Salas mentioned that both political parties have become more focused on winning elections rather than helping the country.

” We are caught in a vicious cycle of corruption,” he stated.

Salas also applauded the government for signing the United Nations Convention Against Corruption and said that there is so much more that the government can do.

According to Salas, government needs to first put its house in order before demanding so much from the public sector.  “Government needs a budget that focuses on the responsible development of our country,” he added.

At the end of his presentation, Senator Salas voted against the 2017/2018 budget.
