By BBN Staff: Former Deputy Prime Minister and Cabinet Minister for the United Democratic Party (UDP), Gaspar Vega, continues to make headlines.

During last week’s house meeting, he was again absent. Our newsroom noted that he has been absent for the last six sittings of the House but is still receivinghis salary as an Area Representative.

Vega’s political career has spiraled downhill ever since he was stripped of the Ministry of Natural Resources (Lands Department) following the last election.

Vega retreated from the spotlight but his son, Andre Vega, made news headlines because he was paid for lands repossessed by the Government of Belize that were issued to him illegally by his father.

Vega was compensated $400,000 for land he never legally owned and is now preparing to legally retain those monies.

Now the Opposition is preparing to launch a recall mechanism by May of this year. If Vega is able to survive the recall, we are told that he will not seek re-election.
