By BBN Staff: The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) designated 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.
The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation has been conducting forums at educational institutions throughout the country as part of their efforts to commemorate the occasion.
The forums present an opportunity to inform tertiary-level and vocational-based tourism students on the importance of sustainability to Belize’s tourism sector and to raise awareness on the contributions of sustainable tourism to development.
In their presentations, the Ministry’s team has highlighted tourism’s role in promoting key development areas under the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals 2030:
Since March of this year, the Ministry has conducted its first series of forums, targeting the Cayo District, and has been hosted by Galen University, Sacred Heart Junior College, and the Center for Employment and Training in Cayo.
It has also begun its engagement of tertiary level institutions in the Belize District, starting with the University of Belize. A total of 187 students have been engaged to date.
The Sustainable Tourism Forums will continue throughout the year and will be carried out in all districts.
