By BBN Staff: The Belize City Council (CitCo) began a project today to demolish structures around the city that may pose a hazard but the first demolition ended in conflict with the proprietor of the building because of a court order.

Councilor Phillip Willoughby, explained that the court order only permits the city to demolish the “Easternmost” portion of the structure, but did not specify any dimensions. According to the engineer, demolishing only a portion of the structure would leave the rest of it weakened and exposed posing an ever greater risk to community members.

The proprietor who declined interview, said that she will not consent to demolition of the entire structure, because the court order only called for a portion to be demolished. The council is currently on site along with the Belize Police Department in an effort to reach a peaceful resolution which will ensure the safety of the residents of the neighborhood.
