By Lisa Shoman: Cannabis Sativa (known locally as marijuana, weed or pot) is like alcohol, sex and voting – not for minors. But for consenting adults? Why not? I have, in my life, smoked pot/eaten laced baked goods and indulged in food prepared with marijuana. I’ve used products enriched with its close relative, Indian hemp… sometimes illegally, but lately, legally.
It is past time to stop pretending as though there is something shameful about cannabis consumption.
Make no mistake – like alcohol, cannabis can be abused. I drink wine, beer, vodka, gin and the occasional mojito. So what? I’m not an alcoholic. I’m not ‘wutless’. I’m not lazy or ‘schupid’ or without ambition or drive. I’m a vibrant, energetic, public-minded, over-achieving, Jewelizean with years of service to my nation who also happens to have consumed, and will in future, when I can do so legally, consume cannabis sativa.
There is no rational excuse to refuse to move past decriminalization to legalization of personal use amounts for adults.
Tax it. License it. It could be a powerhouse boost for tourism. And it is a viable cash crop for the Jewel. Today, I say Legalize it!
