By BBN Staff: The popular Belize-Mexico crossing spot in Northern Belize is seeing an increase in traffic.
Many Belizeans cross over in canoes to shop for cheap grocery items.
Customs and Immigration personnel have installed a sign that says only residents from neighboring villages will be allowed to shop there. This is because Belizeans are now taking excursions to La Union.
A police booth is stationed at the location but since it is not an official border crossing, immigration personnel and custom officers can stop persons from crossing to purchase in Mexico.
Yesterday, the director of Immigration told 7News that La Union is being closely monitored because of the amount of excursions going there.
