By BBN Staff: Chief Magistrate Ann Marie Smith may be leaving Belize later this year.
A reliable source from within the legal community told BBN that Smith’s contract is not being renewed, and she will be leaving Belize in September. Smith replaced former Chief Magistrate Margaret McKenzie in 2011.
Smith is a Jamaican with almost 30 years in the legal field and has served in various capacities, including: law clerk, judicial assistant, magistrate, in countries such as the British Virgin Islands and St. Lucia.
She has earned a reputation for being tough on criminals, and even got shot multiple times in 2010 during her magistracy in St. Lucia.
BBN will be following up on this as more information becomes available.
