By BBN Staff: Nurses in Belize join the world in celebrating Nurses Week from May 6th to 12th under the International Council of Nurses theme, Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Nurses are the cornerstone of healthcare and function in the prevention of illness, promotion of health and the alleviation of suffering throughout our lifetimes.
Nurses are vital in achieving the third goal of the Sustainable Development Goals, which is to “ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”. Furthermore, nurses often times address other social determinants of health including poverty, nutrition, education and climate action which are also sustainable development goals.
The strength in numbers, skills and the strategic and economic contribution of nurses has continued to impact the lives and health of Belize.
Countrywide activities have been planned to recognize nurses throughout the week, which culminates with a nursing conference at the Muffles College Auditorium on Friday and a visit to the Meeting of House of Representatives to honor a nursing icon, current Speaker of the House, Laura Tucker-Longsworth.
Minister of Health, Pablo Marin; the Deputy Director of Health Services with responsibility for Nursing, Augustina Elijio, including the wider management and staff of the Ministry of Health, wishes all nurses in Belize a Happy Nurses Week!
