By BBN Staff: According to unconfirmed reports from Radio Sonora in Guatemala, a Guatemalan soldier was shot to the head inside the Adjacency Zone with Guatemala and Belize.

No details surrounding this incident was made available by Radio Sonora and BBN could not independently confirm the shooting, and if it did occur, then who was responsible for the shooting.  BBN is seeking confirmation from Belize’s Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs and will have an update later.

Guatemalan poachers continue to traverse the Adjacency Zone, are known to carry firearms and have little respect for the armed forces of Belize or Guatemala.

Tensions between Belize and Guatemala remain high and this incident can put a further dampen on an already precarious relationship.

Last year Guatemala rejected an official report commissioned by the Organization of American States (OAS), which cleared Belizean authorities of any wrong doing with regards to the death of a 13-year-old Guatemalan boy who died in a crossfire in Belizean territory after his family opened fire on the Belizean patrol in the area first.
