By Delroy Cuthkelvin: In a time when cynicism and sensationalism have become a staple in our daily consumption of information through mainstream and social media, there’s a powerful and positive storyline that almost seems to be escaping many of us. It is the fact that in the Capital City of Belmopan, a culture of success and excellence is taking root and taking over in Sports; and it’s been happening in various disciplines.

In Football, Belmopan Bandits SC have just been crowned three-time champions for the second time since the club was re-activated in 2011, having won 7 out of the last 11 championships in Belize’s top league, now called the Premier League of Belize (PLB). This year, the club is headed to the prestigious CONCACAF Champions League tournament. In Basketball, the recently re-established Belmopan Bandits team is currently competing in the championship finals of the National Elite Basketball League (NEBL). And in Softball, the Belmopan Bandits team, formed only a year ago, is presently tied with defending champions Roaring Creek Grace Kennedy for first place in the regular season of the Cayo Softball Association Tournament.

Such phenomenal success is hardly accidental. It is the result of serious commitment and investment by a great number of persons, foremost among them Belmopan’s Area Representative Hon John Saldivar, who is the founder and President of Bandits Sports, and whose characteristic leadership is making a positive difference on many fronts and at various levels throughout the community and country. It could never have happened without the massive investment by Government (particularly in sports infrastructure), the tremendous support from the business community, and the dedicated and growing fan base. Much thanks also to media organizations like TNC for their invaluable contribution through the world class television coverage they have been providing.

The timing of such a success story in sports could never be better, with the unprecedented social challenges our community is facing these days. If there was ever a time our athletes and young people needed this, that time is now. It goes without saying that for this success story to continue and to spread across the nation, it will require even greater and more consistent support from every sector of our community.

Let’s do this!
