By BBN Staff: Police in Toledo District are reporting that on Wednesday, May 31st, 2017 at 1:50 p.m., they visited San Vicente Village in the Toledo District where they spoke with the Alcalde – Edgar Pinto who informed them that at 12:00 p.m., a villager reported to him that he saw the body of a baby floating in the river.

Pinto led the authorities to a pasture about half mile off the main road in the village, where they saw the body of a new born baby floating about five meters off the river bank in an advanced state of decomposition.

Investigation reveals that the Guatemalan mother, 29, of San Vicente Village gave birth to the baby at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 28th, 2017 and then reportedly threw the baby in the river.

The body was retrieved from the river where it was observed to be a male child and was transported to the Punta Gorda Hospital Morgue where it was pronounced dead on arrival at 6:00 p.m.

Police have detained the Guatemalan mother and a Belizean farmer pending investigation.
