By BBN Staff: This morning, members of the Belize Olympic Association gathered in front of Brodies on Regent Street, Belize city,  for the annual Olympic Day Run.

The event gathered around 250 participants from various disciplines including volley ball, soft ball and athletics, for a non competitive run in celebration of the Olympic movement.

Runners were grouped into four divisions: infants, juniors, masters, and open. The infant category, ages 9 and under, did a single lap, measuring 0.53 miles. The juniors did one lap measuring 1.3 miles,  while the masters and open did two laps for a total of 2.6 miles.

Geovanni Alamilla, assistant secretary general of the Belize Olympic Committee, explained that the committee gives out medals and certificates of participation to runners, even though the event is not promoted as a competitive one, to motivate young athletes to come out.

“Events like this is where the Olympic Association and the Triathlon Association notice potential athletes,” Alamillia said. “When you see them at these ages, nine or ten years old you think ‘This person has some potential, lets see if we can get them in some type of formal training.'”

The race is funded by the International Olympic Committee.
