Over 30 women detained in immigration crackdown

Posted: Thursday, June 22, 2017. 7:49 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Over 30 women have been detained following a joint operation between the Belize Police Department and Immigration officers.

Authorities detained the women after conducting immigration checks at various bars in Stann Creek and Toledo, where many of the “workers” did not have the proper documentation to show that they are in Belize legally.

The southern raid follows two more done in Cayo and in Belize City, where officials have detained numerous persons pending deportation and charged several employers for employing persons who did not have proper documentation.

Immigration officials say that the raids are focused on finding victims of human trafficking, and are not necessarily targeting the bar workers.

There are more than 30 such bars in Belize City alone, making the operation a tedious one for officials.
