By BBN Staff: Police confirmed today that Gian Espadas, 22, was busted in the West Landivar area today with 12 pounds of marijuana. Espadas, who was also involved in the contraband bust along with Minister Edmond Castro’s sons not even two weeks ago, was arrested and charged for drug trafficking.

According to police, members of the Mobile Interdiction Team intercepted a gold Kia Spectra based on a radio transmission. When police searched the vehicle, cops found a large black square-shaped plastic bag on the floor of the passenger side. Espadas was escorted to the Queen Street police station where he was processed.

Shortly after police made the confirmation, the media questioned whether or not Espadas was the same person involved in the Castro incident. The Police Press Officer responded it was not the same Gian Espadas, however, further probing from the media revealed it was indeed the same individual. After the media pointed out the detail, Eastern Division South Commander, ACP Chester Williams later confirmed police had made a mistake.

Espadas was busted along with Dedrick Ramclan and the Castro brothers, Wasani and Jafari for transporting 89 cases of contraband Corona beer. The incident followed another earlier incident, in which the Castro boys had a run-in with south-side Belize City cops. The incidents caused a lot of controversy as the police department took on a lot of criticism for what many viewed as preferential treatment of a Minister’s children.
