Guatemalan tanker spills oil in Sarstoon River

By BBN Staff: On Saturday, Publinews from Guatemala reported that a tanker spilt oil in the Sarstoon River that Belize and Guatemala share.

According to the report, the tanker truck carrying oil crashed at kilometer 325 of the route to Chahal, Alta Verapaz.

The pipe came out of the asphaltic belt and it went off, and fell near the Sarstoon River.

By the impact, the cistern was opened and oil began to spill and contaminated the tributary.

The environmental organization, Centro de Acción Legal Ambiental y Social de Guatemala (CALAS) has requested Guatemala’s Ministry of Environment to take necessary measures to prevent the oil from doing irreparable damage to the Sarstoon River.
