By BBN Staff: Scotiabank is giving away scholarships to 60  primary school students country wide, beginning today with the downtown Belize City branch.

The bank held a brief ceremony at the brach this afternoon, where they gifted their scholarship recipients with backpacks full of school supplies for the upcoming school year. The bank’s Vice President, Michael Shaw, explained that today marks the 11th year that the bank has kept this commitment.

“You can’t have development in this country without good education, that’s why we’re so involved in educational initiatives,” Shaw said.

He added that the bank, to date, has given 814 scholarships, and will commit to increasing the amount so that next year they will give out a total of 1,000.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Patrick Faber attended the event to give the recipients words of encouragement and speak on the benefits of having a good education.
