NICH hosts Benque Viejo’s Alborada Day 3

By BBN Staff: The Community of Benque Viejo Del Carmen has started its 9 day Fiesta in honor of the Patron Saint – Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

These nine days are a faithful Catholic devotion that started today July 7th and leads into the 16th (the main day), this tradition displays the richness of their cultural heritage as it has been since 1898.

An Alboradas is the breaking of dawn and as early as 3:00 a.m. the alerts are sounded to alert and notify the community that this celebration is about to commence, repeated every thirty minutes. This faithful devotion brings many golden citizens, youths, and children, to early morning prayers, singing of carmelita songs, accompanied by the melodious sounds of the marimba. Everyday a family or community organization hosts a day by making necessary logistics to carry on the celebration.  This would include floral arrangements for the altar, candles, ensuring marimba music, food, and drinks (breakfast) as well as fireworks among other compliments.

In the quest to promote and preserve Benque Viejo’s rich cultural heritage, the Benque House of Culture annually hosts Day # 3.

This year it will be observed on Sunday, July 9th, 2017 starting at 4:00 am with  prayers and chants followed by a hearty breakfast of bollos and other accompaniments at the Parish Hall of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (their may be a change in venue depending on weather conditions) prayers follow at 5:30 pm and a mass immediately after.

On the completion of the mass, fireworks and lantern displays will be showcased to finalize the day’s celebration.

On the final day, July 16, a procession will be held as an additional activity throughout the streets of Benque Viejo, accompanied by marimba played in the procession route.
