By BBN Staff: On Thursday night, a Honduran national was gunned down while eating at a restaurant in Santa Elena Town, Cayo District.
Jose Castellanos “ El Chele” was shot multiple times in front of his friends around
9 pm at Restaurante Comida Latina y Belicena on the George Price Highway.
Yesterday, the police report stated that an altercation ensued between Castellanos and a 31 year old man.
According to those reports, Castellanos chopped the man and was proceeding to chop him another time when the man pulled out his 9 mm licensed gun and fired several shots at him.
However, yesterday, BBN spoke to some eye witnesses at the restaurant at the time of the incident who explained to us how it unfolded.
Eye witness accounts state that Castellanos and a woman had a friendly relationship but that relationship turned sour when the woman began to spread rumors that Castellanos wanted to kiss her.
Eye witnesses further indicated to BBN that Castellanos then confronted her about the allegations and an argument ensued between them.
The woman then told Castellanos that she would call her son at him and she did.
Nevis Betancourt, 31, arrived at the restaurant shortly thereafter and started to fire shots in the direction of Castellanos and that was when Castellanos attacked him with a machete.
After Castellanos inflicted chopped wounds on Betancourt, Betancourt shot at him multiple times in front of the customers at the establishment.
When Betancourt noticed that Castellanos was badly wounded, he fled the scene and his mother later took him to receive medical attention.
Above is the voice recording of the interview.
BBN notes that the police report issued yesterday did not reveal the name of the suspect in the shooting.
However, police have in their possession the licensed 9 mm of Betancourt and investigation continues.
This afternoon, police reported that the post mortem examination result of Castellanos revealed the cause of death to be asphyxiation due to trachea aspiration due to the multiple gunshot wounds.
Police are also reporting that Betancourt is hospitalized.
