By BBN Staff: General Manager of the Belize Airport Authority (BAA), Nicholas Ruiz, has assured that there are no pending changes to staff, amidst rumors of irregularities in the authority’s accounts.
Ruiz told the media that it is “business as usual” with his office, but conceded that he has been in discussion with both the Minister responsible for Aviation, Manuel Heredia JR., the Ministry’s CEO and with Prime Minister Dean Barrow, about an issue that arose with the departure of the BAA’s accountant in June.
The BAA is no stranger to drastic changes in staff due to irregularities. In 2014, government replaced the entire board of management for the BAA, and stripped Minister Edmond Castro of the portfolio, after it came to light that Castro was using the authorities finances for personal gain.
Former Opposition Leader Francis Fonseca brought it up at the House of Representatives that Castro had made out over 70 cheques for different expenses, including $4000 for his mother’s funeral expenses. When the scandal broke, PM Barrow took it out on the staff, but said Castro’s actions were “wrong but not corruption.”
