Judgment day for Eldred Neal

By BBN Staff: The Belmopan branch of the Public Service Union (PSU) is summoning PSU President Eldred Neal to a special meeting tomorrow, to put an end to Neal’s suspension and the surrounding issues.

Neal, who has been on suspension since May, due to derogatory remarks he made about the PSU’s Garifuna members, will meet members of the union along with independent mediators who will, according to the PSU, “bring the issue of the suspension to a close.”

The PSU issued a statement, saying that the suspension has lasted longer than it should have, which is having a negative effect on both the PSU’s functions and image.

“Thereafter, the Public Service Union of Belize via the Council of Management, will advise membership and the general public of the date, time and place for the holding of the 95th Annual General Meeting where the posts of President, 2nd Vice President, General Secretary, and Councilors will be filled,” the PSU said.

Someone had secretly recorded a conversation Neal was having with Marvin Mora and other PSU members, and then leaked the recording. In the recording, Neal characterized the PSU’s Garifuna members a being “hungry for power” and being the cause of a rift within the union.

Neal had professed his innocence, claiming that the recording that was released was the product of editing, to take the things he were saying out of context to give him a bad reputation.
