Cayo basketball association hosts annual youth camp

By BBN Staff: The San Ignacio and Santa Elena Basketball Association, (SSBA) this week continued to hostits annual youth basketball camp at the SHC auditorium and the Santa Elena Sports Complex. The camp currently has over 100 participants, from the twin towns and runs from 8:00 – 10:00 am for kids ages 5 – 14; and from 5:30 – 8:00 pm for youth ages 15 – 19.

In an exclusive interview, organizer of the camp, Mark O’Brien told BBN that the camp is “promoting respect for the game that raised you and is geared towards teaching the fundamentals of basketball, respect for each other, good sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline and good conduct among the participants, all while having fun”.

According to O’Brien, the SSBA youth basketball camp has been in existence for 8 consecutive years and has produced notable players (referred to as “Ballaz”) like Jamie ‘Kemba’ Carbajal (Point Guard for the Bandits 2017 NEBL Champion), Rajeem ‘Rajo’ Crawford (SHC Secondary School Basketball Champions) and Kyron ‘Tut’ Molina (an upcoming NEBL player). Also, many of the past campers have represented Belize in the CODICADER games in Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica, and Guatemala.

A closing event for the camp will be held on Friday, August 25^th 2017 at the SHC auditorium starting at 5:30 pm. At the closing event, basketball campers will showcase the skills they acquired during throughout the camp.

The SSBA basketball summer camp is receiving much support from the parents of the campers, the local community, the Aguada Hotel and St. Martins Credit Union. The corporate offices of Petrocaribe sponsored the 2017 camp.
