PUP leader goes on the offensive regarding new Vega land scandal

Posted: Wednesday, August 30, 2017. 6:49 p.m. CST.

By BBN Staff: The Leader of the Opposition, John Briceno, today organized a press conference in the wake of another land scandal during the tenure of former Land Minister, Gaspar Vega.

Recently surfaced land documents revealed that Amy Forte had purchased a piece of land on Mosquito Caye and then flipped it to the Vega family for next to pittance.

However, according to Forte she did not do such thing and her signature was forged.

When initially asked about the land scandal, Prime Minister Dean Barrow commented, “It is what it is.”

Today Briceno placed on the record his dissatisfaction with the PM’s, “dismissive comment.”

“What this is, is a Prime Minister making light of one of his minister’s land hustle”, said Briceno, “What it is, is a case of self-dealing on the part of his former Deputy Prime Minister.”

He added, “What it is, is a Prime Minister who chose to do nothing while the nation’s patrimony was being looted and stolen.”

Briceno today demanded that the Prime Minister ensure that the Commissioner of Police instruct the Criminal Investigation Branch to investigate the fraudulent scams by the Vega family. He also demanded that the PM cancel all land titles issued since 2008 to the Vega family.

Furthermore, he requested that the PM establish a commission of inquiry into the corruption at the Lands Ministry for 2008 to 2015.

Finally, the  PUP leader demanded that the PM instruct the Attorney General to initiate a claim for misfeasance in public office against Gaspar Vega and to ensure the recovery of all ill gotten gains by his family.

According to Briceno, the PUP will table a motion in the National Assembly calling for a thorough investigation into the Ministry of Lands during Vega’s time in office. The PUP hopes to do the same in the Senate.
